Help Carrot Creative #2 – Workstations

Yesterday, we posted an introduction to this series in which Carrot Creative asked for ideas from our readers for the design of their new offices. That post has a lot of general information about the company and what they are looking for in an office. Pictures and floorplan are posted below to give some visual help.

Remember that the company would like to house 20 employees in some sort of open space, with 4 executive closed offices.

What should Carrot Creative do for Workstations?

Also, can you tell us any additional information as far as if there are any grouping of employees by type of work they do?

Also, I vote for knocking down that barrier that runs the length of the open area. Get as much natural light into the office as possible.

Hey Stephen,

We currently sit in groups of 2 facing each other based on discipline (e.g. developers, designers, strategy/business), but I’d be open to new seating arrangements to promote interdisciplinary collaboration. We are also very vocal in the office and often get up and talk to each other rather than email or IM.

I’ve always liked Facebook’s open layout, loungey workspace feel (fourth picture down, http://www.officesnapshots.com/2009/08/13/the-new-facebook-office/ ). Especially if they get some of those rocking chairs.

@Jose, I do like that lounge feel as well. That table is by the furniture company Blu Dot. Eames Molded Plastic Rockers are slick too.

@ Adam, I think being together by discipline is a good move. Perhaps have those areas separated by a more lounge space like Jose mentioned. Like, Design/dev on one side of the big open space and Business dev/strategy on the other with a lounge area in between. That way, in order to use the lounge space, the groups on either side would interact.

As a designer, I’ll always advocate as much desk space as possible, with amble room to spread out work and discuss with others. I like the Ikea Galant series (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29807035) which can be added to and linked up. True, you have to buy each part separately, but having adjustable heights will help if anyone is taller and wants a higher desk. A cool gesture would be if you let the staff choose their own chairs, and schedule a trip to a showroom. Set a parameter like colour and budget, and get out of the way.

Avoid anything that even smells like a cubicle. Keep the profiles low and workstations adjustable. Remember, some people are left-handed or have bad knees. There’s nothing worse than feeling live veal at work.
