The Leo Burnett Offices – Sydney

Leo Burnett, an advertising firm with offices around the world, moved into their new Sydney office in 2009 and hired design firm HASSELL to complete the project. Here is the project write-up:

HASSELL has created a distinctive new interior for advertising agency Leo Burnett’s Sydney office. The layout is open, spacious and filled with natural light, providing spaces where the generation of ‘big ideas’ can take place. The space reflects the core social and interactive nature of a creative workplace.

The design concept draws on the surrounding urban environment of Walsh Bay. At the entrance a brick wall with large vertical and horizontal openings allows visitors to see beyond the reception and into the work zone, and then through to the outside. Vertical openings throughout the space frame views of Walsh Bay. The collaborative working space maximises the urban and water views that surround the building.

Timber, plywood and cork have been used to create a raw and natural environment. A timber screen gives privacy to a lounge area and casual meeting spaces are scattered throughout the workplace. Recycled materials have been used for joinery and a mix of new and used furniture adds a feeling of comfort and warmth.

Roorda Offices

“Roorda is an advertising design company located in an old industrial building group in Amsterdam and has a no-nonsense interior. The essence of the design in this hall is a wood ’runner’ from the entrance through the hallway and then a winding staircase into the boardroom. The hall has had a special interpretation to the unique focus of the company has made. The offices have lockable doors with big orange felt, so the degree of open or closed nature of these sites entirely user-determined. Partly because the property has received a maximum transparency, and bathes it all in a sea of light.”

The company’s space is very much an old factory building, right down to the slanted roof. The company has employed a large corridor that can be used for all hands on deck meetings. Offices line the second level, giving employees shared work zones with teams separated by single walls, but essentially still connected. Stage lighting surrounds the office and gives it a wonderful atmosphere that is fitting with the company’s goal.

The office project was completed by Concern.

Mullen – Boston HQ

Completed in 2009, Mullen‘s new agency headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, was the end product of a process that began as the company realized the image they were trying to portray wasn’t coming across from their old location; an old convent.

In an effort to modernize their location and become equipped with the latest and greatest, Mullen worked with New York-based, TPG Architecture, to outfit their new 100,000 sqft space in the heart of Boston. The firm worked to enhance the building’s already great elements like harbor views and loads of natural light. The office takes up three floors and a large staircase was constructed in an effort to connect the three floors in a natural and elegant way. Apparently, dumbwaiters, the necessity at Office Snapshots weren’t in their budget.

Bartle Bogle Hegerty (BBH) Offices – Shanghai

For some people, working from home is a dream. For others (me), working from home is impossible due to the non-work distractions. For employees of Bartle Bogle Hegerty’s Shanghai office, working from home while working at an office is the happy medium.

The space was designed by Asylum, and was intended to be a starting point of social commentary on the frantic pace of Shanghai construction. As a result, the space looks half-finished with what look like holes in the floor, unfinished ceilings, and uneven lighting fixtures that almost mimic construction lighting.

Working in the office however, seems to be much of the same for employees beyond the materials and style of the space. Desks are pretty standard for creative-type companies, though the conference spaces are quite different. Examining the effectiveness of an advertisement in the likes of a home kitchen or your kids’ bedroom seem like fairly new concepts.

Predicta Offices

Welcome to Predicta, a Brazilian-based company that enjoys a bustling office in downtown Olimpia, Brazil. The office takes up a large footprint, and has employees spread out over the majority or it in a hybrid cubicle/open layout. The cubicles are not fully enveloping each person giving privacy, but the short barriers at least allow direct sound to be dampened. However, some workstations have a bit to be desired as seen in the video (the circle table).

The common areas offer a variety of comfortable furnishings and views of the city that give employees a chance to relax and gather themselves. Often times, Predicta employees stay after work is over to just spend time with one another.
