GUESS Offices – Los Angeles

“GUESS engaged STUDIOS Architecture to design their new 100,000 sf creative headquarters located in the garment district of the lower east side of downtown Los Angeles.

The layout of the space is organized around three main creative teams. Public use spaces were added to include the main campus reception (housed within a large red lacquer “G”), the main elevated executive conference room (with dual views of the multi-purpose room and the creative teams), visitor lounge and most importantly two key spaces for the campus as a whole; first, a 750-seat multi-purpose room for all-hands meetings, screening of first-run movies and most importantly an on-site location, purpose-built room for their seasonal fashion & runway shows, and second, a full-service kitchen and commissary to service the overall campus.

The overall concept for the renovation of the exterior shell and the layout of the interiors focused first on what we termed “5th Avenue”. This was the existing East-West-link walking-path already in place between the existing buildings. Although we provided enclosure to the existing building, we left intact the main access points along this already well-entrenched pathway between the campus buildings. Along the interior of this “new” 5th avenue, we then located the public program spaces including the multi-purpose room, additional fixed bleachers (for additional program seating), the semi-public vendor conference rooms, reception and café. In this way, circulation remained unchanged for the campus, but elevated in stature and effect.

From this semi-public avenue, we then bisected a secure entrance to the creative teams known as “Bamboo Way”. It allowed us to introduce a in-ground bamboo planter running nearly the full length of the building and created visual privacy for adjacent rooms while also acting as an introduction of a natural element within what is otherwise a concrete jungle. Once within the enclave of the creative teams, dedicated pin-up spaces, secure sample rooms and most importantly, elevated conference rooms – all have 360 degree views back to the team work areas below.”

Edun Offices, NYC

New York City is the fashion capital of the United States and attracts a large number of big name designers. Edun, an eco design studio recently moved into their new space, which is choc full of reclaimed materials. Edun’s office and showroom was designed by New York-based firm, Spacesmith.

The first noticeable feature of the space are the Tom Sawyer-looking whitewashed walls fashioned from reclaimed wood. Edun was conscientious of using recycled materials in an effort to expand their eco-centric brand into their space. Pioneer Millwork was used to source the materials.

In that same vein, the company used locally-crafted, as well as restored furniture to fill their decorating needs. The office is also bathed in bright light, which was intentionally comprised mainly of natural light, augmented by typical ceiling-based fixtures.

A little more about the project from Spacesmith:

In 2010, Spacesmith was retained to design the lifestyle fashion brand’s new 8,600 square foot space to house offices; a showroom; design, production & marketing teams; and a sample room on the corner of Grand and Mercer Streets in Soho. The design intent was to keep the new construction to a minimum while allowing natural daylight to penetrate into the space and to embrace EDUN’s commitment to sustainability. It was fundamental to EDUN that Spacesmith design the space using reclaimed and salvaged materials and furnishings and to work with local vendors, craftsmen and craftswomen.

TOMS Shoes Office – Video Tour

For those of you that haven’t heard of TOMS Shoes, it is a pretty neat business run out of Santa Monica, California. They sell shoes that people like. For each pair of shoes someone buys, they donate a pair to someone in need in the world. the company has grown quite large over the last couple years and looks to only grow larger.

The TOMS office isn’t a typical workplace by any means. As you can see in the video, it is basically a combination office/warehouse that has a collection of interns and employees scattered about. Instead of cubicles, they just hung canvas sheets from the ceiling to give some privacy. The environment seems pretty laid back, but you can’t really complain when the business started out of the guys apartment and has been able to give away over 140,000 pairs of shoes.

Urban Outfitters HQ

We don’t cover companies like Urban Outfitters too often, but we came across this office and it was just too nice to pass up. You know Urban Outfitters: the hip, stylish clothing and home store located on a hip, stylish street near you. You’d expect their offices to be a thing of beauty, and yeah, they are.

Urban Outfitter’s headquarters in Philadelphia, PA are like the campus to some Bohemian University. It’s bright, it’ss airy, it’s colorful, and it’s comfortable and functional. Plus, it’s even sunny there! Although, if the FX network has taught me one thing (and it really has taught me only one thing) it’s that it’s always sunny in Philadelphia.

Office Snapshots Tours Zappos HQ

Every so often I have the opportunity to visit one of the companies we write about on Office Snapshots to get a real-life visit instead of one of the virtual variety. Well, the latest of these visits was to Zappos HQ in Henderson, Nevada. Special thanks to Alex Kirmse at Zappos for arranging it and giving the tour.

If you haven’t ever heard of Zappos, odds are that you don’t have feet. It is (probably) the world’s largest shoe retailer, carrying almost one hundred thousand million trillion different brands of shoe. Well, maybe not that many, but close.

As far as their office is concerned, it contains somewhere around 700 employees in two different buildings (get a job there). One thing that you are sure to notice is that creativity and expression are large parts of the company culture. This is seen through each employee’s cubicle and each department’s conference room, which they design for themselves. Everyone from every department was super friendly making the experience extra enjoyable.
