Belzberg Architects’ Office – Santa Monica

Belzberg Architects have created a wonderful office space in Santa Monica, CA.

“The 20th Street Offices serve as creative working studios for three design firms in Santa Monica, California. Located on a 7,500 square foot lot in one of the United States top ‘green’ cities, they consist of approximately 6,800 sf of studio space at two stories with a mezzanine. Santa Monica earned this ranking with its extensive Green Building Program and public policies.”

Oftentimes office design is held back because of pre-existing conditions or structures, but all of that is thrown out when creating from scratch. The space, which rises off of the ground level using stilts, provides parking beneath its rectangular structure, as well as a good-sized solar panel layout on the roof. Belzberg’s building achieved LEED-Gold, which was an important goal for the firm as they strive to lead architecture trends by example.

Blind Offices

My wife and I just moved to Santa Barbara and one of the first things I did was find local architecture firms that had some interesting work to feature. Shubin + Donaldson is one such company that designed the offices for Blind, a motion graphics company located in Santa Monica.

Here is a little excerpt from the architects:

“A playful yet sophisticated composition of materials, textures, and styles describes a dynamic architectural proxy for the inspired energy of this motion graphics firm. The conversion of a non-descript two level storage warehouse into a modern creative office space nurtures a dialogue between compliment and contrast, mixing historical ornament with simple/strong material expression and irreducible detail.

The entry sequence is initiated by the insertion of a warm Ipe wood-lined portico leading to a darkly rendered upper level lobby where lace patterned panels and molding coincide in juxtaposition to polished concrete and blackened steel plate.

These formal and material relationships characterize, stimulate, and foster the willful and innovative thought occurring within.”

For those of you that haven’t heard of TOMS Shoes, it is a pretty neat business run out of Santa Monica, California. They sell shoes that people like. For each pair of shoes someone buys, they donate a pair to someone in need in the world. the company has grown quite large over the last couple years and looks to only grow larger.

The TOMS office isn’t a typical workplace by any means. As you can see in the video, it is basically a combination office/warehouse that has a collection of interns and employees scattered about. Instead of cubicles, they just hung canvas sheets from the ceiling to give some privacy. The environment seems pretty laid back, but you can’t really complain when the business started out of the guys apartment and has been able to give away over 140,000 pairs of shoes.

Activision Office

The world would be a pretty dreary place without Activision. Imagine, if you will, a life without Pitfall!, without Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and without Guitar Hero. That is bleak world, my friends, and not one I would want to be a part of. So, before I take my own life, let us return to a time and place where we do our darndest to avoid pits, where anyone can skate like Tony Hawk, and where even 5 year olds can shred like Slash.

Activision’s office in Santa Monica is just what you’d expect from a major video game publishing company, what with their motion capture studio, their graffiti walls, and their numerous skateboards and guitars. The best part, though, is definitely the map of LA on the wall of the conference room. I heard that the map is so accurate, it’s actually used as the official LA map on Google Maps. It’s true, I checked on Snopes and everything.
