“The design solution focuses on a folded “wrapper” organizing the space into thirds to permit views and admit daylight from the street. The existing building shell is painted white while the “wrapper” is painted red in reference to a bowl of cherries, a trademark topping of the client’s frozen custard. Aluminum awning windows salvaged from another project were rotated 90 degrees and used as casements to admit north light to the workstations, giving each workstation individual control of daylight and ventilation. Translucent polycarbonate barn doors define semi-private spaces without sacrificing daylight.

Existing plumbing and mechanical systems were left in place, exposed along the central column line, which informed the organization of the space and the use of the “wrapper” to hide the existing systems. High efficiency fluorescent fixtures located on top of the wrapper indirectly light the pressed tin ceiling. Wall mounted fixtures supplement the indirect lighting on one side and reinforce the perspective from the street, while task lighting is utilized at each workstation.”

The office is sprawling throughout a space with more desks that the eye can see. From the looks of it, they like to have fun at the office, but in quite a different style than say, Zappos. Some areas have big TVs, others have bigger TV’s. One interesting thing to note is that the company has expanded so fast, they employees are just crammed into the space wherever there is room. Perhaps in the future we will get to see Groupon move into a more spacious office.

The offices are straightforward enough with a good selection of desks interspesed throughout the old brick building. The floors are wonderful looking, with very worn wooden slats. While the colors are a little hard to see with the lights off, the blue wall paint is a neat combination with the red of the brick. The office also sports a foosball table and a nice kitchen area for employee lunch prep.

Built in 1909 as a warehouse for bank vaults and parts (two of which remain in the basement), the CouponCabin office in Chicago’s River North community is now home to some 50+ employees in the building’s four floors. The office boasts a nap room, several flat screen TVs and projectors, a rooftop deck, original seats from Comiskey Park and Wrigley Field, and trim and accent walls made of reclaimed wood from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

These offices are located in a large industrial shell, with high ceilings, large windows, and enough non-standard features to give boring offices a headache. To begin, the wood millwork, cork and felt walls, desks, and blackboard walls and doors were built by hand by Stay-Straight Manufacturing. It’s not often to see such craftsmanship in an office built for a technology company, but it makes sense if the company views their work with as much pride as the old trade crafts of wood and steel.

The space is fairly open, with sections of desking located near the outer regions of the office and the common areas near the center. Some of these common areas include a large lunch area with a full kitchen and enough seating to house employees for both meetings and lunches. No doubt the most unique feature of the office are the chalkboards, which are both elegant and smart. The desk spines are fantastic looking, and a great way to spice up the work place while matching the dark wood in the flooring.
