Wieden+Kennedy Headquarters

The Portland-based agency Wieden+Kennedy has been pumping out amazing work wince 1982. Their most recent fame has come from their creation and management of the Old Spice guy advertisements with Isaiah Mustafa. If you’re interested in how that ad was filmed, check out Leo Laporte’s coverage here.

While their work is incredible, we obviously focus on their office space, which is great in and of itself.

Built out of an old warehouse, the office space takes up the four of the five stories and houses around 400 employees. Using the historic 1908 shell, Allied Works created a space that give teams of employees defined spaces while keeping them connected with the open architecture. The center atrium, which is used for everything from company meetings to community events to orchestra performances, connects all four floors into a cohesive whole.

The company boasts a number of fantastic art pieces that take the building from cold and austere to a more fun and creative environment, and the entryway is used to display the face of the company’s many employees.

theGOOD Office – Portland

theGOOD is a full service interactive agency and idea incubator. They create interactive experiences for top tier clients. They also create interactive products for public consumption.

The office space is wide open, with a ton of light from the huge windows. Instead of separating the space using cubicles, they have opted for hanging curtains from the ceiling, which adds some nice decorative elements to the space. Al little bit from the company:

“The office is a small 1000 sq. ft.loft in the Avenue Lofts building. It’s the perfect space for a small creative startup like theGOOD. It also provides a nice home for our many reef inhabitants. Like typical Portlanders, we drink a lot of tea, coffee and whiskey within.”

Urban Airship Offices – Portland

I’m pretty sure that Urban Airship is the best company name I’ve ever heard. The company, which helps make app-making easier, also has a great space in Portland. Here is a little about the space from Jason Glaspey:

“We have a great office, shared with a few other awesome companies, like BankSimple, Uncorked, and Cloud Four. But we own the third floor where the real action happens (the keg).

We have some really cool art when you walk in (that’s all done with tape), and some cool statuettes of some of our customers. Other than that it’s an open floor plan with no closed doors, and wall-to-wall white boards everywhere there isn’t a desk. We all eat together twice a week when lunch is catered, and we throw darts more than anything.

We love it here.”

Grid/plane / Instrument Offices – Portland

Welcome to Grid/plane, an interactive design company based out of Portland. Portland, if you have not had the opportunity to see before, is home to several of the best looking offices on the site. This space is also shared with Instrument, a web design, development, and strategy company.

After a quick look through the photographs below, you’ll agree that Grid/plane has a very collaborative, but pleasing aesthetic appeal. Employees have very wide workstations with several group working areas; one which features beautiful wooden tables, complete with a handy letter press. The office is very open with plenty of space to spread out, including their large ping-pong room, which opens allowing the sweaty ping-pong air to escape.

North Offices – Portland

North is a creative company that specializes in making toy dolls and choo-choo trains for children at Christmas. They are also a brand agency and creative collective, and an expeditionary force of thinkers and makers.

Their offices are top notch bar none and located in Portland, Oregon. Light-colored wood and black are two of my favorite design juxtapositions (college word) in an office. Something about it is just right. The overall look of the office is sort of a modern outdoors, with wooden lunch tables and an outdoorsy wall covering. To match, one room’s table is a split log that Paul Bunyon used as a toothpick. Most of the office is well-lit and open. One new feature are the fabric drape dividers that offer privacy, but cost a whole lot less than real walls.

This office was designed by Skylab Architecture. Or as my 6th grade students would spell it, Architexture.
